Flipkart has created Shopsy, an app aimed at encouraging local entrepreneurship amid the COVID-19 epidemic. According to the e-commerce website, the new platform would allow aspiring Indian entrepreneurs to launch their own online companies with no upfront expenditure. Flipkart, which is owned by Walmart, claims that the platform would enable small entrepreneurs to take advantage of the company's inventory, proven delivery networks, and infrastructure to increase reliability and speed. By 2023, the business hopes to have enabled over 25 million internet entrepreneurs.
According to Flipkart, a person must register on the Shopsy app with their phone number. The app will then provide entrepreneurs with access to 15 crore products across multiple categories on the e-commerce platform. These entrepreneurs will then be able to share handpicked products with potential customers through apps such as WhatsApp or Facebook. The entrepreneur can then place orders on behalf of their connections and earn commissions on the transactions. According to Flipkart, the commission percentage will vary depending on the category of products ordered.
Prakash Sikaria, Senior Vice President – Growth and Monetization, Flipkart, said that the launch is a part of the company's aim to contribute towards creating direct and indirect employment opportunities across the country. It also aims to bring in new online shoppers to the platform by providing an option of interactions with a trusted person. This essentially means that those people who do not transact online due to trust issues will be able to order from the e-commerce platform.
